正态分布最初的给出者并不是高斯而是棣莫弗，他在咖啡馆里研究赌徒问题，用阶乘近似公式导出钟形曲线，发现二项分布在试验次数n足够大时，竟与一种神秘曲线完美重合，这便是正态分布的原型。

在考证《红楼梦》作者时，研究人员通过统计前八十回频繁出现的词汇，并与后四十回进行对比，借助计算机和统计概率方法，以此来甄别前后风格的差异，这就是学概率的应用之一。
